Let down by age. May people grin. May people joke. But the fact remains that old people are just so good at writing humdingers as the young upstarts. Some would say better. Why? Since we wrinklies have more experience, more insight into the lives and memories to draw more than the younger element. And not so much fear.
Even older folk have more empathy with the people go through the highs and lows of life in today’s hectic world, because more likely than not, they have done it, and know that precisely where for the purchase of the T-shirt. They understand what makes things tick at a deeper level, and are likely to have a philosophical assessment of where life is made of and where it’s going, which may breadth and depth to their writing.
I was heartened to read in the May edition of the Writers’ Forum on Mary Cavanagh, which published her first book at the age of 60 years! Brilliant! Go girl! You have plenty of time for at least another 10!
Mary has a writing course that she says that her much more thoughtful and focused on writing and knuckled “The Crowded Bed”, which was subsequently published by Transita. Yes, it can be done.
If you feel that you are knocking on a bit and lose hope in your writing career, once again. Snap out of it and to work. Drawing on that the fight-against-all-rate British spirit, we are over 60 seem to be the only guardians of these days.
